RE: Server Upgrade
~Wei Ekluburgon 19.Apr.03 03:40 PM a Web browser
Domino Server 6.0.1 Windows 2000

We have experienced the same problems during upgrade of our mailservers. We have 2 mailservers i cluster and two additional servers, one for webmail/POP3 and one for backup purposes. All of them are running W2K, three of them with SP2, one with SP3.

We upgraded three of these servers to 6.01 + CF two week ago and experienced no critical problems. Upgrade included UPDALL -R on all mailfiles on the different servers, but no compact (i.e. conversion to ODS43). We did see, however, problems in the replication log on the primæry mailserver (which was the one still on 5.011). Messages indicated that some databases had problems replicating, i.e. messages like the following

Unable to replicate SERVERNAME mail\mailfile.nsf: Invalid or nonexistent document
Unable to replicate with server SERVERNAME: Invalid or nonexistent document

It was obvious that replication did not work as it used to.

When we upgraded (two days ago) the last (and primary) mailserver - the one most of our users use on a daily basis, problems started. Upgrade seemes to go fine, even though UPDALL -R took way much longer. This server is also the only one where quotas were enforced.

When we started the server after UPDALL we experienced a lot of document deletions during fixup as well as corruption problems when certain users accessed the server. Some of the corruption problems was fixed after addition FIXUP, but then the Inbox AND all the user's Folders were empty (even though all the douments seemed to still be in the mailfile). We also got serveral error messages related to updating the mailfile due to quota limits.

As we did not have the other clustered server up at this time we have not yet been able to observer behaviour during cluster replication, although we exeperienced problems here when the primary mailserver was still at 5.011.

we have also experienced problems when we try to create new replicas from one server to another, both from 6.01CF AND 5.011 clients. The creating seems to go fine until its finished when we get the message 'Invalid or nonexistent document'. On the new replica the Inbox AND folders are them empty.

To fix corruption problems we took the server down and downgraded it to 6.0. We then restored all the mailfiles from the backupserver (as this seemed to work fine, i.e. no corruption problems and problems with inbox/folders.

On 6.0 the server seems to run OK, i.e. no corruption problems. We have not yet run and compact to upgrade ODS on any of the servers.

The problem is that we are still observing server to server replication problems (described above) and even though our primary mailserver seems to run OK so far we still experience problems updating the other servers.

Does anyone have a suggestion (or preferably a solution) for the replication problems? We were planning to run FIXUP/UPDALL/COMPACT on certain databases on each of the affected server to see if this solved the problems.

Comments to this is welcome.
